Monterey County Home Charter School opened in 2000 to provide students with an alternative to traditional schools. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The population of the school is diverse with 43% White, 38% Hispanic or Latino, and other ethnicities.
The intention of the school is to provide fund raising activities that will provide support for the school with funds being used for extra curricular activities, graduation ceremonies, high school events, and music programs.
Parents love the way the school provides an education in which each family has a quality-credentialed teacher that meets with students and parents to plan as well as keep track of the individual learning plan that is really based on the student’s interests and abilities. Students and parents alike are very pleased with the various educational programs, workshops, and fieldtrips. Most parents are glad the school provides a newsletter that allows working parents the opportunity to stay up to date on school events.
The majority of parents expressed just how much the teachers and staff help with providing the support they need to home school their children. Students love the idea of being able to work at home but also have the opportunities to spend time with others their own age at all the great workshops and events the school offers.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth of 30 points to 701. The statewide goal is 800. Parents and teachers both expressed they are very proud of the students that worked hard to increase the API. Parents stated that the teachers worked with them to ensure that students were learning so they could meet state standards.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The majority of test results for the students at Monterey County Home Charter were below average in all grades and all subjects. This fact did not bother teachers or parents as the students are doing better in most cases over the scores of the previous year.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Seventy Six percent of 10th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 83% and in math, 67% passed the math exam with the average at 84%.
The school is providing exceptional support for students and families that are being taught at home. To ensure the learning environment and support will help your child succeed you should talk with other parents before making the decision to home school.
