Mount Whitney Virtual Academy, formerly Golden State Virtual Academy, opened in 2010 to provide students with an online option for obtaining a quality education and earn their high school diploma. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades.

The school focuses on core subjects including social studies, language arts, science, math, and electives. The interface is easy to use and offers a rigorous program that will prepare students for college. The school offers activities online daily such as videos, interactive exercises, quizzes, reading assignments, simulations, games, projects, and classroom discussions. The school offers an individual lesson plan to help students succeed.

Since the school is virtual, there are no extra curricular activities or sports. This is the major downside mentioned by both parents and students. The school does not offer any activities so students can work on social skills except in a virtual setting. Most parents would like to see weekly meetings at the school or other location so students can make friends and enjoy other activities such as clubs or sports.

Parents are thrilled with the idea that their children can receive a quality education with the support of wonderful teachers and staff that really want students to succeed. Students are happy with the curriculum and state that learning online has given them more time to work or spend time with their families and friends while still receiving an education.

The Academic Performance Index was not available at this time. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The results of the exams were not available at the time of this writing.

Even though parents and students alike enjoy the virtual learning environment, this type of education setting is not for every child. It would be a good idea to learn more about the percentage of students passing the exams administered by the state prior to enrolling your child.
