New Day Academy opened in 2000 for students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth. The focus is on college prep coursework for the college-bound student as well as courses for students who will be entering the workforce. This helps students achieve well roundedness for successes in and out of school.
Parents are thrilled with this alternative to traditional schooling. They love the non-classroom based learning and so do the students. The school works with high risk students that otherwise would be left behind and pair core classes with fun, independent learning and activities to get the best out of them. This is a wonderful advancement as stated by many parents that have been watching their children slide downhill in previous schools.
At this time the school does not offer extra curricular activities, student clubs or sports, which is a big letdown especially for the higher grades that would like to participate in sports.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 791 to 858. This has made parents very happy with the results and the school is working to raise that number even higher. The statewide goal is 800.
New Day is a school that involves the parents and they can appreciate that. For most the school has given their child a second chance at being successful. Students love that they learn something new every day in an innovative way. Students are allowed to learn on their own or in small personalized groups which is an added plus as reported by students.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The test results showed improvements over the grade levels and test subjects. Some scores were lower than that of the state average, but the school is working each day to improve those numbers.
For the California Exit exam 10th grade students are tested and they excelled here on the English exam with 100% passing, but fell just a little short of the state average of the Math exam.
For parents that are looking for an alternative to traditional school settings to ensure their child is not one left behind, the school is doing a wonderful job of working with students on an individual basis. If you have any concerns, you should take a tour.
