New Designs Charter School opened in 2004 for students in 6th through 11th grades. The focus is a standards-based curriculum mixed with a college prep program emphasizing math, science, engineering, and information technology. The school is preparing their students for real world challenges

What excites parents about New Designs Charter School is the focus on college prep. The staff and teachers are striving for each student to achieve greatness even after the school level. The focus is on a core based curriculum with a sports program as well for students who wish to participate. The sports offered include boys and girl’s soccer, basketball and track and field. There is also boys football, girls volleyball and girls softball. The school does not offer extra curricular activities or student clubs at this time.

The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 742 which was a 3 point increase from the year before. This has parents working with the school to raise that score as the statewide goal is 800. However, most parents are happy to see the increase.

Parents speak strongly about the teachers at New Designs Charter School, stating they work well with the students. There has been some concern about the stunets being taught to test rather than think on their own. Some former students expressed that this was disappointing. Other students mentioned that the principal is not good at leadership and the school is disorganized.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results showed areas of improvement for both the standardized tests as well as the Exit Exam given to 10th grade students.

Even with the negative comments from students, the school is providing a quality education and improving yearly. To ensure the learning environment will fit your family, you should take a tour before enrolling your child.
