New Designs Charter School – Watts Campus opened in 2009 to serve students in grades 6th through twelfth. The focus and goal is to prepare students for advanced careers in the fields of Medicine, Engineering and Information Technology. This helps students prepare for their future beyond high school.

This school prepares its students for the future and parents are very impressed with this factor. All parents want their children to be successful in life and school and at New Designs, this is where that begins. Core subjects are at the basis of the curriculum, but students also have the opportunity to play sports including soccer, basketball, track and field, football, volleyball, and softball. There are no other student clubs or activities available.

The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 660 which was an increase of last year’s numbers. Parents want this number to improve so that it can match or exceed the statewide goal of 800. The teachers at New Designs Charter School – Watts Campus are working with the students each day to improve that number.

Some parents love the attention and motivation that their children receive at New Designs Charter School – Watts Campus. That is not the case for all parents, however. Others do not recommend the school because their opinion is one that the staff does not care and the school is a mess. Even some students stated that the teachers are unprofessional and the school is unsafe.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results showed scores below the state averages. This is a concern for parents prompting teachers to take action.

With the scores of the exams and the comments of a few parents and teachers it would be in your best interest to take a tour of the school and personally speak with other parents that have students attending the school before enrolling your child.
