New Village Charter School opened in 2006 for girls that are at risk. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grade with small class size and a rigorous curriculum to ensure students are prepared for college and beyond. The school ensures students are meeting the admission requirements for the University of California as well as other colleges. The school is a public charter school that only offers an education to girls.
All students will receive a faculty adviser that will help them through their four years of attending the school to ensure they reach their goals. The population at New Village Charter School is diverse with 83% Hispanic or Latino, 14% African American, 2% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 1% unspecified.
At this time, the school does not offer any extra curricular activities or clubs as the school works toward ensuring students graduate high school and go onward to college or join the workforce.
Students are very happy with the school stating it is like a family instead of a school. All students expressed they are respected and treated very nice at the school with teachers that really care. The school offers a safe learning environment which most students stating this is one of their favorite things about the school. Parents are very pleased the school is giving their girls a second chance to succeed. Most parents stated that the school is truly a blessing in the community that is actually helping students succeed. The learning environment is excellent and each student is known by name by many teachers and staff.
The Academic Performance Index increased 31 points from the previous year to 553. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase, but are still a bit disappointed they have not met the statewide goal.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages across the board in all subjects and grade levels.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at New Millennium Secondary school did very well with the exit exam with 65% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 45% in math with the state at 84%.
Overall, the school is providing students with a quality education. It would be in your best interest to take a tour of the school and talk with parents that have students enrolled prior to enrolling your child.
