New Visions Academy – Cottonwood Review

New Visions Academy opened their charter school campus in Cottonwood in 1999. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades with an average of 33 students enrolled per year. The school works with students that are at risk of not graduating for a variety of reasons to ensure they receive the best quality education and achieve their goals. The only extra curricular activity available is ceramics/sculpture.

Students enjoy going to school where they feel like they are learning much better and have the one on one attention they need. The teachers are very caring and work with students to help them learn the core subjects so they can receive their high school diploma and join the workforce after gradation. One parent was not happy with the school and stated the students are not treated, as they should be.

Since most students that attend the school have had some type of issues with their studies, the AIMS series of tests may not be the best way to measure how the school is performing in providing the best educational tools. For students to graduate high school, they must pass the AIMS tests. Students at New Visions Academy did not do very well with percentages of students passing the reading exam was 28% below state averages, in science no student passed the exam, in writing 48% below average, and in math no student passed the exam.

Unless your child is failing school, I would look elsewhere as this school does not seem to helping students learn the fundamentals they need to graduate from high school. On the other hand, they work with students that are behind in their studies, so the rate of graduating students may be higher than the test scores show in 10th grade. It would be best to talk with staff and parents so you can make a better decision.
