Oakland Military Institute, College Prep opened in 2002 for students in grades sixth through twelfth. The school has a rich culture and history that is based upon academic excellence. The goal is to develop each student as a scholar and leader. The curriculum is rigorous with military discipline and character building as the main focuses.
This school offers plenty of activities to keep its students not only focused but having fun as well. They offer color guard and drill teams which are both competitive. There is also a parent advisory board allowing parents to be involved every step of the way. Parents like this because they know what is happening at school and how they can help. Students love the athletics which include flag football, volleyball, soccer, dodge ball, basketball, hockey, badminton, softball four square kickball, relay aces, and tap outs and even staff vs. student competitions.
This school gets high marks from parents because it is very detailed oriented with great teachers and a strong military discipline. There is real dedication and hard work, which parents know, is what their children will need to survive in the real world. Students acknowledge that the curriculum is tough but does teach life lessons.
The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 743, which was 16 points down from the previous year’s score. The statewide goal is 800 prompting parents, students, and staff to work harder to achieve stronger numbers. The downward slide was not a pleasing figure, but parents realize that the teachers are working with students to raise the score.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The test results for the students at Oakland Military Institute, College Prep showed both highs and lows as compared to the state averages. In some cases the students actually tied those numbers.
On the 10th grade California Exit exam the students passed the English exam with results over the state. On the Math exam they scored an 81% which was just short of the state average of 84%.
Oakland Military Institute, College Prep is doing a fair job of providing a quality education. It would still be a good idea to talk with parents and teachers to ensure the learning environment is one that will fit the needs of your family.
