Oakland Unity High School opened in 2003 for students in grades ninth through twelfth. The school offers an independent curriculum for those living in the Oakland area. The school also focuses on a strong college prep so that every student can succeed after high school.
With small classes, individual advisors and extensive college prep courses it is easy to see why parents like this school. Student life at Oakland offers more than core subjects and college prep though. Students love that they can participate in government, journalism, yearbook, chess club, black student union, mural painting, a gardening program, basketball, soccer volleyball and cross-country. Parents also love the field trips that have taken students to D.C. and all the way to El Salvador.
Students rave about the school because they have so many extracurricular activities to choose from along with great core classes. The teachers were also stated as being super helpful. Parents are impressed that their children are getting what is needed to graduate as well as go to a 4-year college or university.
The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 705 which was down 30 points from the last year’s academic number. The statewide goal is 800 prompting the staff, teachers and students to take action and raise that number.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
On the 9th, 10th and 11th grade exams the test results showed low and high scores as compared to the state averages. This showed the faculty the areas needed for improvement and that is a daily focus at the school.
California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test 10th grade high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. For the students at Oakland Unity High School their scores fell below the state averages. They scored 79% and 80% with the state at 83% and 84%.
The Oakland Unity High School is working together as a small community to ensure the success of each student while working on improving numbers. To ensure the school is the proper fit for your child, you should take a tour.
