Ocean Charter School opened their North Campus in 2006 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional schools. The school provides a Waldorf education that blends arts inclusive curriculum with multi-age classrooms, small class sizes, and an education platform that encourages ecological awareness, social awareness, and individual achievement. The arts inclusive curriculum provides students with the opportunity to enjoy such things as music, drama, movement, painting, drawing, games, sculpture, handwork, and gardening.
Parents love the Waldorf method that reaches out to the whole child instead of focusing only on academics. Students love their teachers and enjoy all courses. Many students stated that school gives them so much to do that is fun that is not like learning at all. Parents love the fact that their children want to go to school and when they come home, they talk about their day. The one thing students expressed they would like to see are more sports and student clubs. Many parents explained they love the fact that the teacher stays with their class and moves up to the next grade. Other parents said they like the amount of parents that are involved in the school, making it more like a family environment.
The Academic Performance Index increased 10 points from the previous year to 872. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are glad to see the school is exceeding the statewide goal, which makes them very proud of their children.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was above average in all courses and grade levels.
Ocean Charter School – North Campus is providing students with an exceptional education. If you have any worries regarding the Waldorf method, it would be a good idea to visit the school and learn more about the curriculum prior to enrolling your child.
