Ocean Grove Charter School opened in 2005 to provide families with an alternative to traditional school settings. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade with the opportunity to enjoy independent study. The school provides credentialed teacher for families to help them develop individualized learning for their children. The opportunities include community based or home based instruction that allows selecting individualized curriculum that is based on the functioning grade level of each child as well as their own unique learning style. The school provides all materials, supportive instruction, and resources.
Parents are absolutely thrilled with the support the school provides for families that have chosen to home school their children. The great opportunities found in the community create a very unique learning environment. Students stated that they really enjoy school now that they can work at their own pace without any peer pressure. Most parents expressed that their children are doing so well that they are actually passing courses half way through the year and going forward to another grade level on that subject. Students said that the curriculum is fun and they really enjoy learning
The Academic Performance Index increased 15 points from the previous year to 801. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are so proud of this figure and the fact they can actually help their children reach their goals.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with some below state averages and other above state averages. Examples include 48% of 2nd graders passed the English exam with the average at 58%, 77% of 5th graders passed the English exam with the state at 63%, and 25% of 9th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state average at 25%. Parents are very happy with the results showing their students are meeting the standards of the state.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at the school saw scores of 86% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 73% in math with the state at 82%.
