Open Charter Magnet School opened in 1993 for students in kindergarten through 5th grades. The school offers a constructivist philosophy that helps students become actively involved in their own learning as well as challenges them to achieve at the highest levels possible. The curriculum offers a rich hands on learning environment. Most parents expressed just how much they are impressed with the individualized instruction, the focus on development of personal responsibility, activities, and creative programs. Students really enjoy the fun programs and enjoy learning. The school offers mixed age groups, which is perfect as many parents stated. The student body is diverse with the population being 36% White, 25% African American, 17% Asian, 17% Hispanic, 4% unspecified, and 1% Filipino.

Parents stated that their children love learning at this school and that they have seen a huge difference in their desire to go to school. The curriculum is challenging, teachers are creative, and students are given personal attention as stated by parents. Some parents explained that most parents are involved which helps make the school seem more like family than a school.

The Academic Performance Index was not available at the time of this writing. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was above average in all grade levels and all subjects.
