Opportunities for Learning opened their Baldwin Park campus in 2002 for at risk students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers part time study as well as year round scheduling. Programs available include accelerated credit learning, advancement placement courses, core knowledge, gifted, direct instruction, independent study, individually guided instruction, standards based, and virtual school. The school serves students that are considered at risk to achieve their high school diploma. These students are often ones that are ethnic minorities, socio-economically challenged, parenting teens, pregnant, and students that have dropped out of school or are not attending. The school has a diverse student population, which includes 55% Hispanic, 13% African American, 21% White, 3% Asian, 5% unspecified, 2% Filipino, and 1% Pacific Islander.
Parents are very happy that the school is offering a safe and nurturing learning environment while giving their children a second chance to obtain their diploma. Students love the way the teachers treat them special and give them the attention they need to succeed. The principal, staff, and teachers are very dedicated as many parents stated. Parents cannot believe there are so many electives and programs offered that ensure their children stay interested in attending school. The only downside for some students is the lack of sports.
The Academic Performance Index increased 19 points from the previous to 718. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased the students are doing so well and increasing this number.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages which was not a concern for most parents.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at the school saw scores of 89% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 81% in math with the state at 84%.
