Opportunities for Learning opened their Hermosa Beach campus in 2009 for at risk students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers part time study as well as year round scheduling along with home based programs. Programs available include advancement placement courses, core knowledge, gifted, direct instruction, accelerated credit learning, independent study, individually guided instruction, standards based, and virtual school. The school serves students that are considered at risk to achieve their high school diploma. These students are often ones that are pregnant, parenting teens, ethnic minorities, socio-economically challenged, and students that have dropped out of school or are skipping school.
Most parents expressed they are very pleased with the opportunities the school is offering their children. Many stated that if it were not for the school, their children would be receiving an education. Students expressed that teachers treat them with respect and help them learn in a way that fits their learning styles, which is a better way to learn. The only downside stated was the lack of sports, for a few students.
The Academic Performance Index increased 2 points from the previous year to 723. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were happy to see this small increase.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages in all grades and courses. Parents are not as concerned about the scores as many of the students would not be working toward a high school diploma at all if it were not for Opportunities for Learning.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at the school saw scores of 90% passing the English exam with the state average at 82% and 73% in math with the state at 84%. Parents are very pleased with these scores as it shows that more than half are ready to graduate.
Overall, the school is providing students with all the educational tools needed to achieve their high school diploma. If you have any concerns, it would be best to talk with other parents that have students attending the school before enrollment.
