Opportunities for Learning – Santa Clarita Review

Opportunities for Learning opened their Santa Clarita campus in 1999 for at risk students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers part time study as well as home based programs along with year-round scheduling. Programs available include core knowledge, gifted, direct instruction, accelerated credit learning, advancement placement courses, independent study, individually guided instruction, standards based, and virtual school. The school serves students that are considered at risk to achieve their high school diploma. These students are often ones that are socio-economically challenged, parenting teens, pregnant, ethnic minorities, and students that have dropped out of school or are not attending. The school has a diverse student population, which includes 35% Hispanic, 13% African American, 42% White, 1% Asian, 1% American Indian, 1% Filipino, and 8% unspecified.

Opinion of parents is very mixed when it comes to Opportunities for Learning – Santa Clarita. A few parents expressed the curriculum is very good and that their children are enjoying learning and going to school. On the other turn of the coin, you have parents that stated the school is disorganized, has a high teacher turn over, and no extra curricular activities. Many students stated they had more than a couple of teachers in one year, which can be difficult when they each change the way things are done. Other students are not happy that there are no clubs or sports to join.

The Academic Performance Index increased 8 points from the previous to 705. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were happy with the increase and are very proud of their children.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages in all courses and grade levels. Parents and students alike are not as concerned with the scores as they are still working toward graduation.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at the school saw scores of 87% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 80% in math with the state at 84%. These were great scores that teachers, parents, and students are very proud of especially the English exam, which was higher than the average.

Overall, the school is doing an exceptional job. If you have any worries due to the low test scores, you should talk with teachers and staff prior to enrolling your child.
