Plumas Charter 146 Review

Plumas Charter 146 opened in 1998 to provide the community with the resources needed for home school families that wish to provide an individualized educational plan for their children. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades.

Even though the school is mainly online, it does offer on site school two days per week where students can participate in pottery, music, and other activities. On the other turn of the coin, students are required to do their schoolwork at home. Some parents had issues with their children not doing their work but were off playing games on the computer. Most parents are very pleased with school, stated that in order to home school, parents and students must be disciplined, and work out a schedule at home for students to be in class. Several upper level students are very excited that they can go to school at home and work a job without any hassles.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 23 points from the previous year to a score of 714. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are glad to see a huge increase, but realize more work is needed to reach the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with percentages being above and below state averages. Examples include 45% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 55% and 82% of 7th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 62%.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English, 80% passed the exam with the state average at 83% and in math 53% passed with the average at 84%.

Overall, Plumas Charter is providing families with the resources needed to provide their children with a quality education. To ensure the learning environment is one that will help your child succeed, you should talk with administration.
