Rilke Schule German School of Arts & Sciences, spanning Kindergarten through 8th grade, is a public charter school in the Anchorage School District that focuses on the German language. It believes that children with expertise in more than one language are bound to excel. The school offers academics of high quality by engaging students through an immersion language curriculum, taught primarily in German.
Until 2007, no school in Anchorage offered German at the elementary school level. Under the leadership of Jo Sanders, an experienced German teacher, Rilke Schule Charter, a tuition-free German immersion school was born. The school is named after one of the greatest poets and writers of the 20th century German Literature, who was attributed with transforming German into a poetic language.
For all five years of its operation, the school has met all the AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) goals. Tests are conducted in April and results announced over the summer. Students are completely immersed in the German culture to ensure they understand the language and the culture that comes with it inside out. Global tolerance is the key to this immersion.
Rilke Schule follows the district and state prescribed curriculum in all other subjects other than Math and German. It is also on the list of German immersion programs abroad. The school focuses on language, arts and sciences and also fosters creativity through arts, music, drama and sports. Admission to the school is by lottery only.
