Rocketship Los Suenos Academy Review

Rocketship Los Suenos Academy opened in 2011 for students in kindergarten through 5th grades. The school offers a college prep program for students that are low income to ensure they have the same opportunities of students across the state to enter a four-year college. The school teaches, reinforces and celebrates five core values, which include respect, responsibility, persistence, empathy and creative expression. The curriculum models used include direct instruction, blended learning, and core knowledge.

Along with core subjects, Rocketship Los Suenos Academy offers a few sports and other extra curricular activities, but the choices are slim. Many parents and students stated this is a major downside, as they would like to see more opportunities for the students.

Most parents are thrilled with the college prep curriculum for the younger grades. The teachers are very caring and provide the help needed to students on an individual basis. Students like their teachers and going to school. The only negative comments were regarding sports, student clubs, and extra curricular activities, which are very low when compared to other schools.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 34 points from the previous year to a score of 793. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were very disappointed to see such a large drop. Many are working with teachers and administration to learn the reason for the drop and ways in which they can help reach the goal set by the state.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was very mixed. Examples include 83% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the average at 64%, 18% of 3rd graders passed the English exam with the state average at 48%, and 52% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the average at 67%.

Since the API dropped and the percentage of students passing the English exam is below state averages, it would be a good idea to learn more about the curriculum and how the school proposes to increase the scores prior to enrolling your child.
