Sacramento River Discovery Charter School opened in 2001 to offer families the opportunity to enjoy a learning environment that strays outside the traditional school setting. The school is for students in 6th through 12th grades. They focus on lectures, labs, fieldwork, internships and field trips to provide students with a hands-on, outside of school approach to learning.
The school curriculum is based on what their students can do after high school. This is why the studies are often propelled outside of the classroom and into real life situations. They call their classroom the community as learning has no walls.
Parents are very pleased with the teaching formats offered at the school. An education with no borders can teach so much more and parents appreciate that. The school ideas and the way that the teachers implement them is what the parents love. As for the students they like their teachers and say that the school is safe. Parents agree that the leadership is strong and that teachers are some of the most knowledgeable they have encountered.
The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease of 3 points from the previous year to a score of 656. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are concerned that the score is below the state average and have voiced concerns to the school. They hope to see a increase in the next year.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was below average across the board for grades 7 through 11. Parents stated that this a concern, but know that the school is working on improving the test scores.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English exam was 83% in English with the average at 83% and in math 82% passed with the average at 84%.
With scores and percentages as seen above, you can rest assured the school is working to improve their scores. For those with any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with other parents prior to enrollment.
