San Jose Charter Academy opened in 1998 to provide the community with an alternative to traditional school with students working with teams of teachers for 2 to 3 years. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The curriculum offered allows students to work in small groups with many hands on projects that focus on healthful nutrition and develop. The student body is diverse with 72% Hispanic or Latino, 10% Asian, 8% White, 5% Filipino, 4% African American, and 1% Pacific Islander.
Along with core subjects, students are encouraged to participate in clubs, extra curricular activities and sports including. art, ASB, Band, basketball, builders club, cheer, choir, flag football, running club, soccer, softball, volleyball, and yearbook. Parents stated that the school is very structured and safe, while providing students with all kinds of options from learning to having fun. Students love the diversity and events.
The majority of parents commented that their children are doing better than others that do not attend the school. The teachers are very well respected and devoted to the school and their students. A few parents stated that the school is unprofessional and not friendly; however, most were very excited that their children have the opportunity to attend the school. Students really enjoy going to school and learning with caring teachers.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 6 points from the previous year to a score of 930. The statewide goal is 800. Parents could not be more pleased with the score. Teachers are highly praised for their efforts to stay above the statewide goal.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was above average across the board in all grade levels and all subjects. Parents stated that even though some parents are not fond of the teachers and staff, the school is providing an exceptional education that will help students in their future educational years and beyond.
With scores and percentages as seen above, you can rest assured the school is providing students with an excellent education. If you do have concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with other parents to ensure the school is the best fit for your family.
