Starshine Academy is a public charter school that opened in 2002 to provide students with the opportunity to attend one school from kindergarten through 12th grades to provide students with a consistent learning environment where students can not only receive a quality education but also make life long friends. The school offers a small close knit community with around 130 students enrolled per year. The study body is 65% Hispanic. The majority of the students the school reaches out to are students that are considered at risk and may not graduate high school for a variety of reasons from working to being behind in credits to not dealing well with traditional schools.
The school utilizes a holistic approach to education that encourages students to become productive members of society and life long learners. The school focuses on the happiness, wealth, health, spirit, body, and mind of each student individually. Teachers are dedicated and encouraging to help ensure every student can achieve their goals in a safe and nurturing learning environment.
There have not been many parents speak regarding their opinion of the school, however, the ones that did only had positive remarks. They are very pleased that the school is giving their children a second chance so to speak in a caring community. Teachers enjoy working at the school and helping students progress. The main reason teachers enjoy working with students at this school is that the curriculum allows for flexibility that blends core subjects with gardening, art, music, and the cooperation of students and staff.
The percentage of students that passed the AIMS exams in third grade were above state average in reading, but below average in other courses. No fourth grader passed the science, math, or writing exams and reading was below average. No fifth grader passed the writing exam and was below state average in other subjects. Sixth graders did much better being above state average in reading and writing, but below average in math. No seventh grader passed the math exam and was below average in other core subjects. Eighth graders were below state average in all core subjects. No 10th grade student passed the science exam and only 9% passed the math exam with reading and writing below state average.
With the test scores being below state average, it would be in your best interest to compare the school with others in the area that offer the same features you like in this school. For students that are failing or may not graduate the school may be the best fit, however, with the low test scores and number of graduates it may not be the best school for your child.
