Steele Canyon High School opened in 2004 to provide students in 9th through 12th grades with an alternative to traditional schools. The school provides a personalized curriculum that is tailor made to help all students succeed.
Along with core subjects, the school offers sports, which include softball, baseball, track & field, swim & dive, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, golf, wrestling, water polo, soccer, basketball, and football. Student clubs available include Academic League, Airbands, Art Club, ASB, AVID Club, Band, Black Student Union, Candy Men Club, Cinema Club, Clay Club, Cougars for Christ, CTR Club, Dance Club, Dance Team, Debate Club, Drama, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), Film Appreciation, French Club, Friday Night Live, Green Team, GSA, Ham Radio Club, Helpers in Heels, Hunger Games Club, Jewish American Club, Key Club, Make A Wish, Marching Band, Mat Stats, Metals Club, Mob Club, Music Appreciation, Nickelback Club, Photography Club, Ping Pong Club, Powderpuff, Science Club, Scratch the Mascot, Show Choir, Ski & Snowboard Club, Softball Club, Sports Med, Surf Team, Toxic Honey Club, Ukelele Club, Video Gaming, Yearbook, Young Life, and Youth for Truth.
Parents had mixed comments regarding the school. Most are very pleased with the curriculum and teachers. On the other hand, some parents expressed their concern since the new principal took over and stated that the school has not been doing as well as since the principal took over. Students stated they really enjoy going to school, love their teachers, and all the fun activities that the school offers. There are several clubs and sports that students can join which makes the school an even better choice as many students stated.
The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 15 points to 799. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very excited with the raise in points and are thrilled that the score is close to the statewide goal.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly above state averages except for 44% of 10th graders passing the Chemistry exam while the state average was 51%, 36% of 10th graders passed the Science exam with the state at 53%, 11% of 11th graders passed the Algebra II exam with the state average at 15%, 16% of 11th graders passed the Chemistry exam while the state average was 34%, and 8% of 11th graders passed the geometry exam with the state at 9%. Parents stated that the teachers could use this information to help students do better with these exams.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. 89% of students passed the English exam with the state at 83% and 93% passed the math exam with the state at 84%. Parents were very pleased with the results of these exams.
Overall, the school is doing an excellent job of providing students with a quality education. If you do have any concerns, it would be in your best interest to take a tour of the school and talk with other parents to ensure the learning environment is the perfect fit for your family.
