Summit High School Review

Summit High School is a public charter school that offers students an alternative to traditional school settings where students can attend a school with a nurturing environment that focuses on trust, openness, and respect. The school opened in 1998 and has an average of 500 students per year in grades 9th through 12th. The school is proud of its personal instruction and individualized instruction that helps students become independent and confident. The school works with students that may need help with credit recovery as well as ensures they stay on track to graduate on time or early.

The administration understands the importance of commitment to each student if they are to succeed along with the importance the community has on the lives of the students and vice versa. The school with community leaders as well as parents to ensure that the educational tools needed is supplied to each student. Along with core subjects, the school also offers drawing, dance, basketball, soccer, student government, and yearbook.

Parents expressed the school is doing a fair job with students that are at risk of quitting school or had discipline problems at traditional schools. Students really enjoy the school and state that teachers work with them to ensure they understand and can achieve their goals. One parent did state that the school has a high turn over of teachers, but that the teachers that were involved with her child were dedicated and devoted. The staff and administration work with parents as well as students.

The percentage of students passing the AIMS exams was below state average in all core subjects. Science was the worst with only 4% of 10th graders passing the exam and only 19% in math.

Before enrolling your child in Summit High School, it would be best to learn more about the curriculum and ask questions regarding the test scores. It is always a good idea to take a tour of the school as well to see if you believe the environment will fit right for your child.
