Summit Leadership Academy – High Desert Review

Summit Leadership Academy opened their High Desert campus in Hesperia in 2004. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades with an average enrollment of 200 students per year. The school centers on training students in specific skills such as military history, fire technology, and criminal justice while students are working toward gaining their high school diploma. The student body is diverse with 45% Hispanic, 44% White, 3% Asian, 2% African American, 1% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 5% unspecified.

Along with core subjects, the school offers a variety of clubs, activities, and events throughout the year. Athletics is an important part of the school for students that wish to participate. The sports offered include cross-country, soccer, and track & field. Most students stated they would like to see more sports like cheer, baseball, and basketball added.

Parents expressed gratitude for the staff and teachers at the school. Many stated that they have noticed a huge difference in their child’s behavior, grades, and desire to attend school after enrolling here. The majority of parents like the safe and strict learning environment. Students like the school and stated that they are doing better attending here than previous schools. Bullying is not a problem and the learning environment is strict but teachers are friendly and caring.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 32 points to 720. The statewide goal is 800. This drop really shocked most parents and have voiced their concerns to administration and teachers.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 48% of 10th graders passed the biology exam with the state at 43%, while 15% of 11th graders passed the Algebra II exam with the state average at 15%. Parents realize that these scores allow teachers to know where the problems are so they can address them.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. 88% of students passed the English exam with the state at 83% and 79% passed the math exam with the state at 84%.

According to comments of parents and students, the school is doing a good job of providing students with the necessary tools to graduate while learning skills. It would still be in your best interest to take a tour prior to enrolling your child to ensure the learning environment is a good fit.
