Sycamore Academy of Science and Cultural Arts opened in 2009 to serve students in kindergarten through 6th grades with a quality education. The school offers an extended school day with a multi age constructivist program along with project based and standards based curriculum. The focus is on the arts, science, and technology.
Along with core subjects, the school offers a variety of sports for those that wish to participate, which include basketball, cheerleading, flag football, kickball, SPARK fitness, and soccer. Students can also enjoy an array of extra curricular activities including architecture, design, drawing, painting, music theory, creative writing, poetry, drama, and film production. Student clubs available include arts and crafts, art club, book club, chess, cooking, community service, drama, game, study buddy, gardening, recycling, origami, sewing, science, special Olympics, student government, yoga, and yearbook.
Most parents agree the school is exceptional and is providing a better education that most in the area. A few parents expressed that the lower grade levels are awesome, but the upper grade levels are lacking. When talking with parents you will hear some state the school is great for all students while others state that the school is like most traditional schools. Students stated they like the school and their teachers. Students did not have any complaints.
The Academic Performance Index increased 47 points to 831. The statewide goal is 800. Even parents that are not pleased with the school stated they liked this score but wish the API rank was better than 4 out of 10.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with some above averages and other below. Examples include 61% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 69%, 74% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state at 67%, and 65% of 5th graders passed the Science exam with the state average at 60%. Parents were very pleased with the percentages of students passing the exams in most cases.
Since the opinion of parents are different from what the test results are showing, it would be in your best interest to talk with parents that have students enrolled before making a decision of enrolling your child.
