The Guidance Charter School opened in 2001 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school focuses on a challenging education while centering on reading, writing, phonics, and computation. The school offers block scheduling which provides students with a unique learning environment. Other programs offered include honors track and accelerated credit learning.
The student body is diverse with 32% African American 13% White, 26% Hispanic, 7% Asian, 1% American Indian, and 22% unspecified.
The school does provide sports for those that wish to participate including basketball, cross country, soccer, and cheerleading.
The majority of parents had positive comments regarding the teachers but did express that administration is more concerned with fund raising than the students. The one thing that most parents agreed on is that the school is very strict and does not tolerate breaking rules. Students even with small infractions can be suspended. On the other hand, some parents stated that this makes the school a safe learning environment. Students said they like the teachers and the school; however, they do get tired of participating in so many fund raisers.
The Academic Performance Index increased 35 points to 783. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased that the score jumped 35 points but are not happy that they have not reached the goal and are only ranked 2 out of 10 for the API statewide rank.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 78% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 64%, 79% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state at 67%, and 48% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state at 55%.
The school is providing a fair education, however, it would be in your best interest to talk with parents and teachers to ensure the learning environment is one in which your child will excel.
