University Preparation School at CSU Channel Islands Review

University Preparation School at CSU Channel Islands opened in 2002 to provide students in kindergarten through 5th grades with a dual immersion program as well as a language enrichment program. The student body is 59% Hispanic, 31% White, 4% African American, 3% Asian, 2% Filipino, and 2% American Indian.

Along with a rigorous curriculum, the school offers physical education, differentiated instruction, community service projects, instrumental music program, and project based units. Extra curricular activities include Dolphin book club, robotics, math club, science fair, Friends of Rachel Club, student leadership, concert band, beginning band, peer tutor program, and yearbook committee. Sports offered are basketball, flag football, volleyball, track, and cheerleading.

Parents are pleased with the dual immersion program as well as the caring teachers. Most love the idea that the school does not rely on textbooks to provide a hands-on learning environment. Students expressed that the workload can be tough but the school offers all kinds of fun ways to learn. Most students really like all that the school offers and had no negative comments.

The Academic Performance Index declined 14 points to 764. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are working with administration and teachers to help raise this score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below average in all grade levels and subjects except for 61% of 5th graders passed the Science exam with the state average at 60%.

Overall, the school is providing a quality education for students that will prepare them for the remainder of their educational years. If you have any worries, you should take a tour prior to enrolling your child.
