Valley Preparatory Academy opened in 2004 to provide families with an alternative to traditional schools offering an independent study curriculum. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades. Valley Preparatory Academy offers a variety of instructional and curriculum models, which include direct instruction, hybrid, character education emphasis, standards based, and project based. The focus is on social justice and service learning.
Along with core subjects, the school offers basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, drawing, painting, photography, instrumental music lessons, rock band, choir, computer animation, and two student clubs including community service and girl scouts.
Parents love the school and stress that the teachers are provides students with hands on learning. The school is safe and caring almost as if being at home. The school stresses family and community, which is an added bonus as most parents stated. Students are very happy attending school and love their teachers. A few parents expressed a bit of concern that is bullying are becoming a problem.
The Academic Performance Index increased 76% to 832. The statewide goal is 800. Parents stated they are very pleased with the huge jump and thank the teachers and administration for their hard work.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 46% of 3rd graders passed the English exam with the state at 48%, 60% of 5th graders passed the Science exam with the state average at 60%, and 54% of 7th graders passed the English exam with the state at 62%.
