Vista Charter Middle School Review

Vista Charter Middle School opened in 2010 for students in 5th through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional school. The school offers an extended school day as well as block scheduling. The instructional and curriculum models offered at the school include project based, individual guided instruction, hybrid, honors track, gifted, direct instruction, core knowledge, college prep, and character building. The student body population is predominantly Hispanic.

Along with core subject, the school offers sports including basketball, flag football, soccer, cheerleading, cross country, and volleyball. Extra curricular activities include band, orchestra, poetry, improve, and creative writing. Student clubs are drill team, chess club, student council, Girls on the Run, yearbook, and student newspaper.

Parents are very impressed with the school and state that the school shows they care about their students and teach students responsibility. Most parents really like the staff and teachers, but a few parents are not pleased when they have issues with bullies. Some parents expressed that the administration is not doing enough to stop the bullying that is going on at the school. Students enjoy attending the school and overall like the majority of teachers. A few did mention there are a few issues with bullies.

The Academic Performance Index declined 10 points to 704. The statewide goal is 800. Most parents were disappointed that the score dropped and have voiced their opinion with administration.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages in all grade levels and all subjects. Parents are talking with teachers and administration to improve these percentages.

The school is providing a fair education; however, it would be in your best interest to talk with parents that have students attending the school to ensure it is the best learning environment for your child.
