Wallis Annenberg High School opened in 2003 to serve students in 9th through 12th grades with a quality education that will prepare each student mentally and academically for entering college. The focus is on ensuring the success of each student.
Along with core subjects, the school offers sports, which include basketball, soccer, volleyball, football, and softball. Extra curricular activities include Astronomy Club, The Outsiders Club, Rock Band, and MESA.
Most parents are pleased with the curriculum but a few stated that the principal does not really listen to parents and often cuts them off when they are asking questions. Many parents believe the teachers are very good but that they are hampered by administration mainly in the last few years. Quite a few parents stated that after the school received a new principal, things have been going down hill. Students on the other hand like most of the teachers. A few complaints from students are that the school does not have enough activities and sports available.
The Academic Performance Index declined 8 points to 742. The statewide goal is 800. Most parents were a bit disappointed with the drop in score.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below state averages except for 53% of 10th graders passed the chemistry exam with the state at 51%, 80% of 10th graders passed the summative math exam with the state at 75%, 55% of 10th graders passed the science exam with the state average at 53%, and 56% of 10th graders passed the world history exam with the state at 46%.
the California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English exam was 90% with the state at 83% and in math 95% with the state at 84%.
The school is providing a wonderful opportunity to students to be prepared for college and beyond. If you have any worries, it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school before enrollment.
