West Phoenix High School is a public charter school that utilizes the principles of interdisciplinary learning where excellence is expected from not from the students but also all staff and teachers. The school opened in 1998 for students in 9th through 12th grades with an average enrollment of 875 students.
West Phoenix High School is part of the Leona Group, which provides tuition free charter school so that students in areas around the US have the opportunity to receive a quality education away from traditional schools. Each school in the system provides individualized lessons so every student can and will succeed. As part of the Leona Group the West Phoenix High School emphasizes on the philosophy that is instilled in each school in the system which is that “all children can and will learn no matter their educational, economic, or ethnicity disadvantages”. The school offers small class size with nurturing and devoted teachers.
Along with core subjects the school offers academic games, character education, chess club, cultural club, language clubs, field trips, gaming club, mentoring, National Honor Society, Robotics, Student action groups, dance, drawing, theater, film production, cheerleading, baseball, cross country, basketball, football, softball, soccer, yearbook, student government, yearbook, and science & technology.
Students are very happy attending West Phoenix High School since the teachers know them by name, they can choose morning or evening classes, and the way they can receive the help they need in a safe school. Parents expressed the school is wonderful and that the school is a second chance for many students that were going to drop out of school or were doing so poorly in traditional that they were not going to graduate. The caring learning environment is helping students succeed. Only a couple of students were not happy with the school, but did not mention specific reasons.
The percentage of students that passed the AIMS series of exams was very low, but you must remember that many of the students attending the school are behind on credits, failing traditional school, or dropped out of school. All percentages were below state average in all core subjects.
It would be a good idea to take a tour of the school and talk with other parents to make sure this is the best school for your child.
