Abilene Christian University

A private institution of higher learning, Abilene Christian University lays emphasis on teaching students the Christian principles that can help them make a positive impact on the community. The aim of this university is to create Christian leaders of their students, by instilling Christian morals and values through the curricula. Students are taught to relate everything to their spiritual backgrounds, right from their practical to their scholastic education.

Abilene Christian University (ACU) was earlier known as The Childers Classical Institute and was founded in 1906 in Abilene, TX, in honor of a churchman in Abilene, Col. J.W. Childers. The university was named after him as the land where the school was constructed was sold by him at a huge discount.

In the beginning, only primary and secondary levels were taught at the school; however, in the year 1914, it was accredited to award junior college degrees and then later accredited for senior college degrees in 1919. The Abilene Christian University which currently boasts of more than 4,800 students, has changed and expanded over the years, with the construction of new buildings and offering numerous degree programs. What has remained unchanged from the beginning was its affiliation with the Abilene church community as well as remaining constantly close to other Christian communities around the world.

ACU’s Leadership Development division encourages its students to participate in community service and campus ministry actively as well as taking part in athletics, clubs and cultural events. It also sponsors several projects and programs that create an atmosphere for experimental learning, in order to develop leadership qualities in the students.

Abilene Christian University’s degree programs include 61 Bachelor’s degrees, 26 Master’s degrees and one doctoral degree. It offers majors in almost every field one can think of, Engineering Science, Animal Science, Spanish, Journalism, Theatre, Christian Ministry, Family Studies, Nutrition, Mathematics, Biblical Text, Environmental Science and Biology among several others.

There are several other professional and continuing education programs sponsored by the university, which include Certified Public Accounts program, Texas Real Estate Licensure certificate program and Continuing Legal Education program for the Texas State Association.

Abilene Christian University focuses on the development of the students into good educated individuals leading the community by focusing on Christian principles and values.
