Portland State University has an innovative approach to education that combines rigorous academics in the classroom and field-based experiences through projects, community partners, and internships. The school also actively promotes development of an educational institutions network and appropriate programs that help serve the community as a whole. The motto of PSU is, “Let Knowledge Serve the City.”
The university was founded in 1946 to offer greater opportunities for higher education in the Portland area – to the surge of returning veterans after World War II in 1945.It was initially named, Vanport Extension Center, a name which it held for the next nine years while it was on its way to achieving college status. The school faced many political potholes, including the phase where the Oregon Higher Education system also suggested closing the facility. But the students, faculty, politicians and community members fought against that and finally it was given the permission to continue and grow, and renamed as the Portland State College. The main 49-acre campus is located in Portland, Oregon where thousands of undergraduate and graduates get their all-round education. This is the only college in Oregon that has its location in a major metropolitan area. It shows its commitment to sustainability through the green buildings. PSU is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
Portland State University offers 213 Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees and sustainability is included in the curriculum too. The faculty is highly accomplished. Their highly innovative program, “University Studies” replaces the regular undergraduate study program. The U.S. News & World Report also called this, “Program to Look For.”Schools that offer these undergraduate and graduate programs are Business Administration, Engineering & Computer Science, Extended Studies, Education, Liberal Arts & Sciences, Fine & Performing Arts, Urban & Public Affairs and Social Work. Students of PSU are at an advantage as they get education from a school that promotes diversity, and towards this end, an African American Studies program and a Native American Student Center have been added.
The Extended Campus Program offered by PSU allows students to continue with their education without ever physically stepping into the campus. These courses are conducted online and offer Bachelor’s, Master’s as well as Certification Courses. Even students, who are currently enrolled at the campus but wish to shift online, can do so without any issues. The education imparted online is the same as the classroom education.Students gain access to the same curriculum, textbooks and other resources as on the campus, with the only difference being studying online allows a high level of flexibility. Sitting in the comfort of their homes, continuing with their professional and personal responsibilities, students can complete their BS in Criminal Justice, an MBA or a Certificate Course in Early Childhood Education.
PSU students achieve excellence in learning and community service, and are transformed into individuals with incredible values that help in their future. The growing research programs at the university mould them into confident professionals, ready to take up challenges of the work place the minute they leave the university.
