Major Themes in AP Environmental Science

  • The six main themes of Environmental Science are human population growth, sustainability and carrying capacities, global solutions, urbanization, people’s relationship to nature, and ethics in science
  • Human population growth (especially over the last 60 years) has major effects on resources and future growth could be troubling with regard to carry capacity. Famine and food crises have occurred many times in the last 60 years
  • The objective with regard to resources and populations is sustainability. To achieve a sustainable global economy we need population control, restructured energy programs, economic planning, social/legal/political controls, and increased knowledge of our carrying capacity
  • The Gaia hypothesis is a revealing theory about how life has impacted Earth and vice versa
  • Urbanization is has become a ubiquitous problem worldwide. There has been a recent trend of more and more people moving into cities. Also, the number of megacities (like Tokyo) has increased. By 2015, Asia is projected to have the most megacities
  • People and nature impact one another in many ways. One of the crucial questions is: can we have a sustainable environment AND a sustainable economy?
  • In terms of ethics and our approach to these environmental science problems, there are intellectual standards to which we must abide. For instance, the Precautionary Principle tells use to be proactive rather than reactive. Some justifications for our actions/approach are: utilitarian, ecological, aesthetic, recreational, moral, and cultural
